Nelson County VINE Coverage
Virginia Victim Information and Notification Everyday, usually called Virginia Jail VINE, covers all local and regional jails in the state. That includes Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, or ACRJ, the regional custodian for Nelson County detainees. A person arrested in Nelson may therefore appear under ACRJ rather than under a jail bearing the county name. The Nelson County Sheriff makes arrests and transports prisoners, but it does not run a separate Nelson jail roster. VINE is available on the web, through its mobile app, and by telephone at 1-800-467-4943. The service is free, and a guest may search without opening an account.
VINE is a live custody-status and alert service. It is not a permanent Nelson County release archive. Participating jail information can support notices for release, transfer, escape, death, and some program changes. A status event reports what the jail sent to the service. It does not necessarily state the full legal reason, show each pending case, or establish that the person returned to the community. A transfer to VADOC, another jail, federal custody, or an immigration authority can end the ACRJ record while custody continues elsewhere.

Search Nelson County VINE Records
Begin with enough information to separate people who share a name. An offender ID is useful when known. A full name, age or birth information, and the correct facility can also help. For a local Nelson case, the facility match matters most: the expected custodian is ACRJ in Charlottesville. Do not reject a sound match merely because the facility name does not say Nelson. At the same time, never rely on a name alone when several records appear.

- Continue as a guest, or sign in if a saved Watch List is needed.
- Enter the name or offender ID and run the search.
- Compare the identifiers, status, and facility on every likely match.
- Open Record Details and read the custody event exactly as displayed.
If a result reports released or out of custody, it is evidence of a jail-reported change. Next ask ACRJ Records for the booking and release or disposition entry. That record can identify the reason, actual processing detail, and any transfer destination that is releasable. If the person does not appear, try spelling variants and identifiers before drawing a conclusion. A data delay, transfer, expired VINE visibility, wrong custodian, or short local stay can all produce no match.

Nelson County VINE Release Fields
Record Details must be read as a set. Status without the facility may describe a different person. An event without a jail record may not explain whether the change was bond, sentence completion, transfer, or another outcome. Exact labels can change as the service updates its interface, so use the terms shown on the live record rather than an old instruction sheet.

A released result is more useful than disappearance because it describes a reported event. Even so, VINE does not promise a permanent record after release. ACRJ's own release or disposition record and the relevant Nelson court order carry more detail. The court record supplies the authority for a bond, dismissal, sentence, or other order, while ACRJ confirms that physical processing occurred.
Set Nelson County Release Alerts
Registration begins from the matched person, not from a countywide release roll. Select the current notification control on Record Details. Available channels may include telephone, email, text, TTY, and an in-app notice, depending on the platform and program. Registration information is confidential, and VINE states that the incarcerated person is not told who registered. Anyone may use the public local-jail registration described in the official VINE material.
- Choose Get Notified, or the equivalent control shown on the current matched record.
- Select an offered channel and enter the telephone number or email address.
- Choose the notification language, save the method, and complete the confirmation steps.
- For telephone calls, create a private PIN. Enter it during the call to acknowledge receipt and stop repeat calls.
- If opening an account, complete the separate email or text verification code process.
The account verification code is not the telephone alert PIN. Each serves a different purpose. Keep the call PIN private so only the registrant can acknowledge a notice. An account can preserve a Watch List, but an account is not required merely to search or register. Older PDFs may show past button names. Follow the controls visible on the current service.
Note: Telephone notification PINs acknowledge automated calls; they are separate from account verification codes and should remain private.
When Nelson Custody Systems Change
Virginia uses two notification systems at a crucial boundary. Publicly searchable Virginia Jail VINE follows ACRJ and the state's other local or regional jails. VADOC victim notifications use NAAVI for eligible victims and immediate family when the person is in state custody. A VINE registration does not move with a Nelson person who transfers from ACRJ into VADOC responsibility. The correct response is to follow the actual custodian and register in the system that serves it.
This split is easy to miss because a state-responsible person may spend time in a local jail. Physical location alone does not settle which authority controls the sentence or notification. A court order, ACRJ transfer entry, VADOC locator result, or DOC number can establish the transition. The public may still use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator to check state custody or supervision, even though NAAVI registration has narrower eligibility.

Nelson Release Checks Beyond VINE
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people in state institutions, some state-responsible people in local or regional jails, and people on VADOC probation or parole. Search by the seven-digit DOC ID when available. Otherwise use the full last name and at least the first three letters of the first name, then compare optional age, location, race, and gender filters with care. A supervision result suggests incarceration ended while VADOC authority continues. A no-result can also reflect full discharge or a case outside VADOC.
VINE does not cover federal BOP custody. Use the federal locator for a federal prisoner and read a released result only as the end of BOP custody. U.S. Marshals records may be needed for a federal pretrial detainee who never entered a BOP institution. An ICE detainer can also turn an apparent local release into a transfer. Each system proves only its own custody boundary.

Confirm Nelson County VINE Releases
For an ACRJ event, contact Records at 434-977-6981 extension 303, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ask for the existing release or disposition record using the full legal name, booking number or date of birth if known, Nelson as the committing jurisdiction, and an approximate date range. A narrow request gives staff a clear record to locate. If a court action is central, compare both the Nelson General District and Circuit Court tracks because misdemeanor or preliminary matters and felony sentencing can appear in different systems.
For state custody, an executed VADOC Order of Release, notification-of-release record, or official discharge confirmation is stronger than a passed projected date. For a local case, the ACRJ record is stronger than silence from VINE. An alert remains timely corroboration, especially when it names the event, but it does not replace the underlying record. Keep the source, date received, person identifiers, and exact status together so the result is not taken out of context.
